2020 was for the books when it comes to financial literacy and my credit repair journey. I was forced to add value to my life when California went into complete lockdown. I honestly had no choice but to reflect on things I needed to improve and force myself to execute.

My credit was terrible, and I procrastinated for years on what I would do to fix it. I don’t know what took me so long — my silly excuse what that I didn’t have time or that I needed to hire someone.

Well, in 2020, I had nothing but time. I simply googled what made up a person’s credit score. I was able to educate myself on the problem areas on my credit report. My fico score was 520 at the beginning of 2020, and honestly, my credit was not that bad; I just didn’t understand credit.

My credit utilization was high; I had late payments and multiple accounts in collections. I paid down my credit cards and added two more credit cards to increase my available credit. I made sure I paid for everything on time. I lastly mailed in dispute letters to get items off my credit. As of January 2021, I have a fico score of 658.

I challenge you to create of list of things that you feel are challenging. I next want you to educate yourself on the items on that list. I learned that things aren't as difficult as we perceive them. It's about learning how to overcome them through education and execution.

As I sit and reflect on 2020, I realized my excuses were a way to stall, which ultimately got me nowhere. I was then forced into a deep reflection that made me realize my financial and credit issues were in my head. The only thing I needed to do was to educate myself and be consistent; imagine if you put this same effort into starting a business. They say the key to success is education, execution, and consistency. I have no more excuses in 2021 and neither should you.
